The Bari Kothi was built in the late 1700s. The name of the house, Bari Kothi (literally meaning the Palace of the Elder), was coined in the late 1800s since it was the house of the elder (bari) brother, Rai Bahadur Budh Sing Dudhoria. Bari Kothi is known across Murshidabad as one of the most architecturally significant houses in the region showcasing Greek, Roman and French architecture. The Bari Kothi is spread across three-fourth acres of Land and houses a Sheesh Mahal, Library, Music Room, Durbar Hall, Janana Chowk, Gaddi Ghar, Halwai Khana, Gulabi Chawara amongst other parts of the house.

Bari Kothi, like similar other palaces of the region was abandoned for the more than half a century. With the decline of Murshidabad and Azimganj, most of the families moved to Kolkata looking for better opportunities and a stable environment. It was only in the year 2015 when a Canadian Architect and restoration specialist was invited to Bari Kothi to bring the palace to its former glory. Events that transpired thereafter was history in the making; with a team larger than 100 personnel restoring Bari Kothi to make it into the first self-sustaining rustic luxury heritage hotel.

The project was nicknamed "Project Priceless". The intent of the project, as the name suggests, was not merely to convert the palace into a heritage hotel but was to create Bari Kothi into a self-sustaining eco system. An eco-system that could restore and save the sole of Bari Kothi i.e. make Bari Kothi generate its own income, make Bari Kothi improve the local economy, make Bari Kothi better the lives of the local community and most importantly, make Bari Kothi proud of itself and carry forward its legacy. Bari Kothi is remembered fondly in history as being more than just a house belonging to noble men; it was considered to be an institution. The local community was proud to have Zamindars such as Rai Bahadur Budh Sing Dudhoria. Project Priceless is a tribute to that piece of history.

মোগল আমলের মুর্শিদাবাদের পুরোনো নগর গুলির মধ্যে আজিমগঞ্জ ছিল অন্যতম। বহরমপুর থেকে ২০ কিমি উত্তরে ভাগীরথীর পশ্চিম পাড়ে প্রায় ৩১৬ বছর আগে অর্থাৎ ১৭০৩ খ্রীষ্টাব্দে আজিমগঞ্জ নগর গড়ে ওঠে।(সংক্ষিপ্ত)

মোগল আমলে বাংলার সুবাদার ছিলেন সম্রাট ঔরঙ্গজেবের নাতি আজিম-উস-সান । তাঁরই নামানুসারে এই নগরের নাম হয় আজিমগঞ্জ।

আজিমগঞ্জ মূলত সেসময়ে ছিল বহুসংখ্যক ধনশালী জৈন-সম্প্রদায় তথা মারোয়ারীদের বাসস্থান । পাশাপাশি হিন্দু অধ্যুষিতও ছিল। আজিমগঞ্জের জৈনদের পূর্বপুরুষরা আঠারো শতকের দ্বিতীয়ার্ধে রাজস্থানের বিকানীর ও মারোয়াড় প্রদেশ থেকে এখানে আসেন ব্যবসাসূত্রে। মূলত জৈনদেরই প্রচেষ্টায় আজিমগঞ্জ নগর আঠারো ঊনিশ শতকে বাংলার এক‌টি প্রধান বানিজ্য কেন্দ্রে পরিনত হয়। (সংক্ষিপ্ত)

ইতিহাসখ্যাত জগৎ শেঠের (The banker of Nawab) আমন্ত্রণে ১৭৬৫ খ্রীষ্টাব্দে আগ্রার বাসিন্দা খড়গ সিং আজিমগঞ্জে এসে বসতি স্থাপন করেন। তার ৯ বছর পর অর্থাৎ ১৭৭৪ সালে আজিমগঞ্জে আসেন হাজারীমল। ---- এরা আজিমগঞ্জের প্রথমদিকের বাসিন্দা ছিলেন।(সংক্ষিপ্ত)

আজিমগঞ্জে সেসময়ে ধনী ব্যক্তিরা বিশেষ করে ধনবান জৈনরা সবচেয়ে বেশি থাকতেন। ব্রিটিশ শাসন কালে এখান থেকেই সবচেয়ে বেশি 'রায় বাহাদুর' হয়েছিলেন। অন্য কোথাও থেকে এত বেশি 'রায় বাহাদুর' হয় নি। এদেরই একজন রায় ধনপত সিং বাহাদুর ( Banker of Azimganj) ১৮৬৬ খ্রীষ্টাব্দে দাতব্য চিকিৎসালয় স্থাপন করেন বহু অর্থব্যয়ে এবং মুর্শিদাবাদে সর্বপ্রথম ব্যক্তিগত উদ্যোগে নিজ অর্থব্যয়ে আজিমগঞ্জ থেকে নলহাটি পর্যন্ত রেলপথ স্থাপন করেন ।(সংক্ষিপ্ত)

ইংরেজ আমলে আজিমগঞ্জে জৈনদের এত বিপুল প্রতিপত্তি ছিল যে আজিমগঞ্জকে সিটি হিসেবে ঘোষণা করা হয়েছিল।(সংক্ষিপ্ত)

আজিমগঞ্জের আনাচে-কানাচে ঘুরলেই দেখতে পাবেন ধনী জৈন মহাজন ব্যবসায়ীদের বিশাল বিশাল অট্টালিকা। বিখ্যাত জৈন পরিবার, সিঙ্ঘী পরিবার, নাহার পরিবার, দূগড় পরিবার, লওলাক্ষা পরিবার, শ্রীমল পরিবার, চুরোরিয়া পরিবার, বাছাওয়াত পরিবার, দুধোরিয়া পরিবার, কোঠারি পরিবার, শেঠিয়া পরিবার, বয়েদ পরিবার, পাটোয়ারি পরিবার অন্যান্য বিখ্যাত মারোয়ারি পরিবারদের বাসগৃহ আজিমগঞ্জে দেখা যায়। এরা ব্যবসা বানিজ্য থেকে শুরু করে জমিদারি তথা সমস্ত প্রশাসনিক ক্ষেত্রে এদের আর্থিক বিনিয়োগ ছিল।(সংক্ষিপ্ত)

আজিমগঞ্জ বেশ কয়েকটি অতি সুন্দর জৈন মন্দির আছে ; যার মধ্যে কয়েকটি মন্দিরের মাথা বহু চূড়াবিশিষ্ট। চিন্তামনি মন্দির, নেমিনাথ জীর মন্দির, শান্তি নাথ জীর মন্দির, সম্ববনাথ জীর মন্দির, সদমপ্রভু মন্দির ইত্যাদি মন্দির আছে। আর আছে রামবাগের দাদাবাড়ি বা দাদাস্থান, এক বিখ্যাত জৈন মন্দির। এছাড়া আছে বিখ্যাত ছোট কুঠি ও বড়ো কুঠি। আছে আজিমগঞ্জ রাজবাড়ী, ধর্মশালা, মার্বেল হাইস, বারোদুয়ারী ইত্যাদি।(সংক্ষিপ্ত)

দেশ স্বাধীন হয়ে যাওয়ার পর অনেক ধনী ও সম্ভ্রান্ত জৈন পরিবার আজিমগঞ্জের মায়া ত্যাগ করে চলে গেছেন ভারতের অন্যান্য শহরে ব্যবসাসূত্রে। ফলে আজিমগঞ্জের গৌরব একটু ম্লান হয়ে গেছে। কিছু জৈন এখনো আছেন আজিমগঞ্জে। তারাই আজিমগঞ্জের জৈনদের ঐতিহাসিক ঐতিহ্যকে টিম টিম করে জ্বালিয়ে রেখে চলেছেন।

জৈনদের উৎসবগুলি মহাসমারোহে পালিত হয়ে থাকে আজিমগঞ্জে। নানান সময়ে নানান জৈন ধর্মগুরুর আগমন ঘটে আজিমগঞ্জে। জৈনদের মহাবীর জয়ন্তীতে স্থানীয় বিদ্যালয়গুলি ছুটি থাকে ।

বর্তমানে আজিমগঞ্জে একটি হাসপাতাল, পোস্ট অফিস, এক‌টি পুলিশ ফাঁড়ি, কেশর কুমারী বালিকা বিদ্যালয় (উ মা), রায় বুধ সিং বাহাদুর উচ্চ বিদ্যালয় (বয়েজ), ডনবস্কো উচ্চ বিদ্যালয় ( কো-এড) এবং দুটি রেল স্টেশন আছে। আজিমগঞ্জের সবজি বাজার বিখ্যাত। এছাড়া মাছের বাজারও বিখ্যাত । এখানকার বাজারের ছানা ও ক্ষীরের সন্দেশ মিষ্টি মিষ্টান্ন বিশেষভাবে বিখ্যাত।(সংক্ষিপ্ত)

আজিমগঞ্জ সংলগ্ন সন্নিহিত অঞ্চলে অনেক প্রাচীন ইতিহাসের ছড়াছড়ি দেখা যায়। বাংলার 'বারানসী' বড়নগর এই আজিমগঞ্জেই। এরপর বিনোদ--একটি প্রাচীন আখড়া, লোহাগঞ্জ--- একটি একটি প্রাচীন আখড়া, দস্তুরহাট---একটি ঐতিহাসিক হাট, গয়সাবাদ--- সুলতানি আমলের নগর, পাল আমলের--- মহীপাল ও সাগরদীঘি, রাজা কুসুমেশ্বরের কুসুমখোলা, রাজা বেণীমাধবের বেণীপুর, বাংলার জগৎশেঠদের শেঠেরলহর ও একান্ন পীঠের অন্যতম পীঠ কিরিটেশ্বরী, নবাব সিরাজদ্দৌলা'র হীরাঝিল, প্রাচীন লুপ্তপ্রায় ঐতিহাসিক নদী ঝুমকা ---আজিমগঞ্জে এলেই দেখতে পাবেন। প্রাচীন ইতিহাসের আবছা ছবি মানসলোকে দেখতে অবলোকন করতে পারবেন। এখানকার ইতিহাস অতি প্রাচীন ইতিহাস ---- এনিয়ে নিরন্তর গবেষণা চলছে। ( সংক্ষিপ্ত)

যাত্রাপথঃ-----

হাওড়া থেকে আজিমগঞ্জগামী যেকোনো ট্রেনে আজিমগঞ্জ জংশনে নেমে আজিমগঞ্জ আসা যায়। আবার শিয়ালদহ থেকে লালগোলাগামী যেকোনো ট্রেনে জিয়াগঞ্জ স্টেশনে নেমে ভাগীরথী পার হয়ে আজিমগঞ্জ আসা যায়।

কলকাতা ধর্মতলা থেকে শিলিগুড়িগামী বাসে বহরমপুরে নেমে ছোট গাড়িতে জিয়াগঞ্জ এসে নদী পার হয়ে আজিমগঞ্জে আসা যায়।

শিলিগুড়ির দিক থেকেও বাস বা ট্রেনে আজিমগঞ্জ আসা যায়।

থাকাঃ --- আজিমগঞ্জে টুরিস্টদের থাকার জন্য হোটেলের সুব্যবস্থা রয়েছে। সুলভ দামে ভালো খাবার পাওয়ার ব্যবস্থা আছে। যার যেমন সাধ্য, তার সেরকম ব্যবস্থা এখানে আছে। অভিজাত হোটেল থেকে শুরু করে সাধারণ হোটেল এখানে আছে। আছে নিরাপত্তা।

পরিবহন ব্যবস্থাঃ----- ঘুরে বেড়ানোর জন্য খুব কম ভাড়ায় ছোট গাড়ির ব্যবস্থা আছে, আছে চার চাকার সুবিধা। আছে নদীবক্ষে নৌকা বা লঞ্চে ভ্রমণের ব্যবস্থা । আছে ভ্রমন গাইডের ব্যবস্থা।

১৯৪৯ সালে পশ্চিমবঙ্গ রাজ্যের মুর্শিদাবাদ জেলার আজিমগঞ্জ নামক স্থানে ভাগীরাথী নদী থাকে সামান্য দূরে দক্ষিনদিকে প্রধান রাস্তার উপরে আজিমগঞ্জ রায় বুধ সিং বাহাদুর উচ্চ বিদ্যালয়টি তৈরী হয়েছিল রাজা রায় বুধ সিং (Rai Budh Singh) এর নেতৃত্বে।

মস্ত এক জায়গায় বিরাট ইমারতের মত এর অবস্থান। এর চতুর্দিকে দেওয়াল দিয়ে ঘেরা এবং সম্মুখভাগ সুকোমল সবুজ গাছপালা ও সবুজ ঘাসে মোড়া। বিদ্যালয়টি দ্বিতল এবং দুটি খন্ডে বিভক্ত। মনরম এক পরিবেশ মণ্ডিত এই বিদ্যালয়ের প্রধান শিক্ষক হলেন শ্রী অমীরন চৌধুরী মহাশয়, যার নেতৃত্বে বিদ্যালয়টির বাতাবরন ও নিয়মশৃঙ্খলা পরিচালিত ও নিয়ন্ত্রিত হয়। এছাড়াও এই বিদ্যালয়ে রয়েছেন আরও অনেকজন শিক্ষক ও শিক্ষকা ।

তাঁরা বিভিন্ন বিষয়ে অভিজ্ঞ এবং বিভিন্ন বিষয়ের সঙ্গে যুক্ত। এটি একটি উচ্চমাধ্যমিক বিদ্যালয়। ৮ টি শ্রেণিতে বিভক্ত এই বিদ্যালয়ের প্রতিটি শ্রেণীর জন্য আলাদা আলাদা শ্রেণীকক্ষ রয়েছে। এই ৮ টি শ্রেণী আবার বিভিন্ন বিভাগে বিভক্ত। যথা- ক)বিভাগ, খ)বিভাগ, গ)বিভাগ প্রভৃতি। পঞ্চম থেকে দশম শ্রেণীর প্রতিটি বিভাগে প্রায় ৮০ জন করে ছাত্র রয়েছে এবং একাদশ ও দ্বাদশ শ্রেণিতে রয়েছে প্রায় ১৫০ জন করে ছাত্র-ছাত্রী। প্রতিটি শ্রেণীর প্রতিটি বিভাগের ছাত্রছাত্রীদের উচ্চশিক্ষা প্রদানের জন্য বিভিন্ন প্রশিক্ষনপ্রাপ্ত শিক্ষক শিক্ষিকা রয়েছেন। সেই প্রশিকশোনপ্রাপ্ত শিক্ষক শিক্ষিকাদের দ্বারা ছাত্রছাত্রীদের অত্যন্ত যত্নের সহিত শিক্ষা প্রদান করা হয়।

পঞ্চম ও ষষ্ঠ শ্রেণীতে রয়েছে ছয়টি করে বিষয়।যথা-বাংলা,ইংরেজি,অঙ্ক,বিজ্ঞান ভূগোল এবং ইতিহাস। সপ্তম ও অষ্টম শ্রেণীতে ঐ ছটি বিষয় ছাড়াও বিজ্ঞান এর দুটি শাখা যথা - প্রকৃতি বিজ্ঞান ও জীবন বিজ্ঞান এবং সংস্কৃত বিষয় দুটি রয়েছে। এছাড়া একাদশ ও দ্বাদশ শ্রেণীতে দুটি বিষয় বিভাগ রয়েছে,যথা-কলাবিভাগ ও বিজ্ঞানবিভাগ। কলাবিভাগ এ যেসব বিষয় রয়েছে সেগুলি হল- বাংলা, ইংরেজি, সংস্কৃত, দর্শন, ভূগোল, ইতিহাস, রাষ্ট্রবিজ্ঞান ও অর্থনীতি।

বিজ্ঞান বিভাগে রয়েছে বাংলা, ইংরেজি, অঙ্ক, জীববিদ্যা, পদার্থবিদ্যা ও রসায়নবিদ্যা। এই সমস্ত বিষয়গুলি বিভিন্ন অভিজ্ঞ শিক্ষক-শিক্ষিকাদের দ্বারা পড়ানো হয়। বিজ্ঞান বিভাগের বিষয়গুলি এবং কলাবিভাগের ভূগোল বিষয়টির জন্য আলাদা “Theory and Practical Room” রয়েছে। যেখানে কম্পিউটার এর মাধ্যমে ছাত্রছাত্রীদের শিক্ষা প্রদান করা হয়। প্রত্যহ বিদ্যালয়ের পঠনপাঠন শুরু হয় বেলা ১১টা থেকে, মাঝে ১টা বেজে ৪৫ মিনিটে টিফিন বিরতি হয় এবং পঠনপাঠন সমাপ্ত হয় বিকেল ৪টে বেজে ৩০ মিনিটে। এই সমস্ত কিছুর মধ্য দিয়ে ছাত্রছাত্রীরা অত্যন্ত আনন্দের সহিত জ্ঞান অর্জনে অঙ্গিভূত হয়। শিক্ষা অর্জন ছাড়াও সকলকে কিছু নিয়মশৃঙ্খলা পালন করতে হয়। এই নিয়মশৃঙ্খলাগুলি হল নিম্নরূপ-

নিয়মাবলী -

১) প্রত্যহ বিদ্যালয়ে ১০টা ৩০ মিনিট এর মধ্যে সকলকে  উপস্থিত হতে হবে।

২) প্রত্যেক ছাত্রছাত্রীকে বিদ্যালয়ের পোশাক পরিধান করে আসতে হবে।

৩) প্রত্যহ বিদ্যালয় প্রাঙ্গনে প্রার্থনার জন্য সকল ছাত্রছাত্রী ও শিক্ষকশিক্ষিকার উপস্থিতি বাঞ্ছনিয়।

৪) বিদ্যালয়ের পঠনপাঠন শুরু হলে অন্যথা সময় নষ্ট না করা।

৫) শিক্ষক-শিক্ষিকার সহিত ভদ্র আচরন করা।

৬) যত্র তত্র থুতু ও খাদ্যসামগ্রী না ফেলা।

৭) অনুচিৎভাবে কাউকে আঘাত না করা।

8) প্রত্যহ সমস্ত ক্লাসে অংশগ্রহণ করা।

৯) বিদ্যালয়ের অনুষ্ঠানে সাদরে অংশগ্রহণ করা।

১০) অসৎ উপায় অবলম্বন না করা।

                            

                                      বিদ্যালয়ের এই সকল নিয়মাবলী সকলে সমানভাবে ও মনযোগসহকারে পালন করে চলে। এই কারনেই বিদ্যালয়টির পরিবেশ অত্যন্ত শান্ত ও সুখময়কর।পঠনপাঠন ছাড়াও বিদ্যালয়টিতে বিভিন্ন সময়ে বিভিন্ন অনুষ্ঠান পালন করা হয়ে থাকে। যথা-রবীন্দ্রজয়ন্তী, নেতাজীজয়ন্তী, শহীদ দিবস, স্বাধীনতা দিবস প্রভৃতি।

   এছাড়াও, প্রতি বছর অক্টোবর মাসের শেষে এক বিরাট অনুষ্ঠান অনুষ্ঠিত হয়ে থাকে এই  বিদ্যালয়ে। সেই অনুষ্ঠানটি হল “নবীনবরন ও বার্ষিক পুরষ্কার বিতরনী অনুষ্ঠান”। আয়োজিত এই অনুষ্ঠানে প্রতি বছর প্রবীনরা নবীনদের রাখী পড়িয়ে,কলম ও পুষ্প দিয়ে সাদরে বরন করে নিয়ে তাদের আহ্বান জানাই এবং যে সমস্ত ছাত্রছাত্রীরা বার্ষিক পরীক্ষায় মেধাবী স্থান গ্রহন করে তাদের পুরষ্কার দিয়ে সম্মানিত করা হয়। এর সঙ্গে চলে এক বিশাল সাংস্কৃতিক অনুষ্ঠান যা বিদ্যালয়ের শিক্ষক-শিক্ষিকা ও ছাত্রছাত্রীদের দ্বারা পরিচালিত হয়। সকলে অত্যন্ত আনন্দের সহিত এই অনুষ্ঠানের আয়োজন করেন এবং তাতে অংশগ্রহন করেন। আয়োজিত এই অনুষ্ঠানে নাচ, গান, আবৃত্তি, নাটক প্রভৃতি অনুষ্ঠিত হয়ে থাকে বিভিন্ন ছাত্রছাত্রীদের দ্বারা। এই সমস্ত অনুষ্ঠান ছাড়াও জানুয়ারী মাসের শেষে বার্ষিক ক্রীড়া প্রতিযোগিতা এবং মাঘ মাসে দেবী সরস্বতীর পূজো হয়ে থাকে। এই সমস্ত কিছুর মধ্য দিয়ে বিদ্যালয়টি একটি সুখময়কর ও সুবাতাবরন যুক্ত পরিবেশে পরিণত হয়ে ওঠে।                                                                                      অবশেষে আমার অভিজ্ঞতার মধ্য দিয়ে বলতে পারি Azimganj Rai Budh Singh High School টি সুবাতাবরন ও নিয়মশৃংখলা মণ্ডিত একটি উচ্চ বিদ্যাস্থল, যেখানে বিদ্যাদেবী মা সরস্বতীর আরাধনার মধ্য দিয়ে ছাত্রছাত্রীদের উচ্চশিক্ষা প্রদান করা হয় তাদের উজ্জ্বল ভবিষ্যতের জন্য। এই শিক্ষায় শিক্ষিত হয়ে তারা নিজেদের জ্ঞানের বিস্তার ঘটিয়ে নিজের পরিবার ও দেশকে গর্বের আসনে প্রতিস্থাপিত করে।

     ভূমিকাঃ পশ্চিমবাংলার একটি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ জেলা হল মুর্শিদাবাদ , আবার মুর্শিদাবাদ জেলার প্রাচীনতম ক্ষুদ্র নগর হল জিয়াগঞ্জ । মুর্শিদাবাদ জেলা শিক্ষা , সংস্কৃতি , অর্থনৈতিক , রাজনৈতিক পরিমণ্ডল নিয়ে এই প্রাচীনতম শহরটি হল জিয়াগঞ্জ । আর শিক্ষা সংস্কৃতি এবং যোগাযোগ ব্যবস্থা ও প্রশাসনিক ব্যবস্থা প্রাচীন কাল থেকেই উন্নত বলেই  মুর্শিদাবাদ জেলার জিয়াগঞ্জ শহরটি জিয়াগঞ্জ বাসির মনের মণিকোঠায় আকড়ে ধরে আছে ।

        প্রাচীন জাতি ও পরিবারের প্রভাবঃ মুর্শিদাবাদ জেলা একটি বহুধর্মীয় ও বহু জাতির বসবাসকারী শহর বলে গণ্য । তার মধ্যে জিয়াগঞ্জ শহরটি প্রায় প্রাচীনকাল থেকেই বহু জাতির বসবাস লক্ষ্য করা যায় । আমরা এই তথ্য ভারতবর্ষের ইতিহাসের পাতা থেকে জানতে পারি । প্রাচীন প্রত্নতাত্ত্বিক নিদর্শন থেকে এবং তাদের সাংস্কৃতিক নিদর্শন থেকে জানতে পারি । এবং তাদের পারিবারিক অনেক তথ্য এই জিয়াগঞ্জ শহরে আজও প্রচলিত আছে । এবং সমাজে তার প্রভাব কিঞ্চিৎ মাত্র রয়ে গেছে বর্তমান সমাজে ।

      ভৌগলিক অবস্থানঃ জিয়াগঞ্জ নগরটি মুর্শিদাবাদ জেলার মধ্যস্থানে অবস্থান করেছে । এই শহরটি উত্তরে ২৪.৫৮ ডিগ্রী এবং ৮৮.৫৫ ডিগ্রী অক্ষরেখায় অবস্থান করেছে । জিয়াগঞ্জ শহরটির পশ্চিমদিকে ভাগিরথী নদী বয়ে চলে গেছে – যার অপর প্রান্তে আজিমগঞ্জ শহরটি অবস্থান করেছে এবং পূর্বে জিয়াগঞ্জ রেল স্টেশন অবস্থান করেছে । ভাগিরথী নদীই  জিয়াগঞ্জ - আজিমগঞ্জ শহর দুটিকে পৃথক করেছে এবং শহর দুটির গুরুত্ব আরও বাড়িয়ে দিয়েছে ।

         শিক্ষা ও সংস্কৃতিঃ শিক্ষা ও সংস্কৃতিতে জিয়াগঞ্জ শহরটি শুধু মুর্শিদাবাদ নয় , সারা ভারতবর্ষে  একটি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ স্থান অধিকার করে আছে । এই শহরে দুটি ডিগ্রী কলেজ আছে , যথা – কল্যাণী বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় পরিচালিত জিয়াগঞ্জ শ্রীপৎ সিং কলেজ  এবং রানি ধন্যা কুমারী কলেজ । এই ডিগ্রী কলেজ দুটি মুর্শিদাবাদের দ্বিতীয় প্রাচীনতম কলেজ । তৎকালীন রাজা শ্রীপৎ সিং এবং তাঁর স্ত্রী  রানি ধন্যা কুমারী কলেজ দুটি প্রতিষ্ঠা করেন, এছাড়া একটি বি.এড. কলেজ ও একটি ডি.এড. কলেজ রয়েছে এবং পশ্চিমবঙ্গের তথ্য প্রযুক্তি বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় পরিচালিত টেকনিক্যাল ইঞ্জিনিয়ারিং কলেজ রয়েছে । এছাড়াও এই শহরে প্রচুর পুরনো বিদ্যালয় রয়েছে এই কারনে এই শহরটি শিক্ষা ক্ষেত্রে প্রচুর উন্নতি সাধন করেছে ।

      সংস্কৃতির দিক দিয়েও জিয়াগঞ্জ শহরটি বেশ এগিয়ে রয়েছে পশ্চিমবঙ্গ তথা ভারতবর্ষে । বর্তমানের বিশিষ্ট গায়ক অরিজিৎ সিং এই জিয়াগঞ্জ শহরেরই ছেলে – তিনি এই ছোট্ট শহরেই সঙ্গীত চর্চা করেই ভারতবর্ষে তার সংস্কৃতিকে ছড়িয়ে দিয়েছে । তাছাড়া মুর্শিদাবাদ জেলা যুব উৎসবে জিয়াগঞ্জ – আজিমগঞ্জ ( বাক্যব্যায় দলটি )  নাটকে জেলায় প্রথম স্থান ( ২০১৪ সালে ) অধিকার করেছে । এছাড়াও হাস্যরসিক মীর আজিমগঞ্জ শহরে জন্মগ্রহণ করেছেন । এর ফলে জিয়াগঞ্জ শহরটি সংস্কৃতির ধারক ও বাহক হিসাবে পশ্চিমবঙ্গের গুরুত্ব যায়গা বলে পরিচিত ।

       অর্থনৈতিক অবস্থানঃ জিয়াগঞ্জ শহরটির অর্থনৈতিক অবস্থা খুব একটা ভাল না হলেও বর্তমান পরিস্থিতিতে খারাপ বলা যাবে না । যদিও জিয়াগঞ্জ শহরের অর্থনৈতিক অবস্থা মুর্শিদকুলি খাঁ – র শাসন কালের সময় থেকেই উন্নত মানের । এখানে অনেক রাজা রানী শাসন চালিয়েছেন এবং তাঁরা এখানকার অর্থনীতিকে স্বচ্ছল করে দিয়ে গেছেন ।

        রাজনৈতিক অবস্থানঃ মুর্শিদাবাদ জেলার জিয়াগঞ্জ শহরটি বর্তমানে জিয়াগঞ্জ – আজিমগঞ্জ পৌরসভার অধীনস্থ এবং পৌরসভাটি বামফ্রন্ট পরিচালিত ।  পৌরসভাটি বামফ্রন্ট পরিচালিত হলেও এখানে অন্যান্ন দলেরও প্রভাব রয়েছে যেমনঃ সি.পি.আই.এম. , কংগ্রেস , বিজেপি এবং তৃণমূল কংগ্রেস । এই দল গুলি পৌরসভা পরিচালনা করার সঙ্গে সঙ্গে কলেজ গুলিও পরিচালনা করে তবে , বর্তমানে জিয়াগঞ্জ শ্রীপৎ সিং কলেজ এবং রানি ধন্যা কুমারী কলেজ দুটি ভারতের ছাত্র পরিষদ ( সি.পি. ) পরিচালিত ।

     জীবিকা ও জনসংখ্যাঃ জিয়াগঞ্জ শহরটির জনসংখ্যা এক লক্ষ্যের বেশী । তার ফলে এই শহরটির জনঘনত্ব প্রতি বর্গ কিমিতে ৩০০০- এর বেশী । তাই এই শহরটি জনঘনত্ব পূর্ণ শহর । শহরটির অধিবাসীরা বিভিন্ন ভাবে জীবিকা নির্বাহ করে থাকে । এখানে যেমন সরকারী চাকুরীজীবী রয়েছে তেমনই রয়েছে দিনমজুর – যারা দৈনিক কাজকর্ম করে তাদের জীবিকা নির্বাহ করে থাকে ।

    পরিকাঠামোগত অবস্থাঃ মুর্শিদাবাদ জেলায় তিনটি লোকসভা রয়েছে তার মধ্যে জিয়াগঞ্জ শহরটি মুর্শিদাবাদ লোকসভার অধীনে, এটি বর্তমানে ভারতের জাতীয় কংগ্রেসের অধীনস্থ এবং এই শহরটি মুর্শিদাবাদ বিধানসভার অধীনে । তবে এই শহরটি জিয়াগঞ্জ থানার মুর্শিদাবাদ – জিয়াগঞ্জ ব্লকের অন্তর্গত এবং লালবাগ মহকুমা-র অধীনে ।

     চিকিৎসা ব্যবস্থাঃ মুর্শিদাবাদ জেলার প্রাচীন শহর জিয়াগঞ্জের চিকিৎসা ব্যবস্থা আজিমগঞ্জের থেকে একটু বেশী উন্নত হলেও খুব একটা উন্নত নয় । জিয়াগঞ্জে চিকিৎসা কেন্দ্র বলতে একটি সরকারী হাঁসপাতাল যেটি নাম মাত্রই ও আরেকটি জিয়াগঞ্জ লন্ডন মিশন হাঁসপাতাল ( খ্রিষ্টই সেবা সদন ) – ইংরেজ শাসন কালের একটি চিকিৎসাকেন্দ্র, যেটি বর্তমানে জিয়াগঞ্জ – আজিমগঞ্জ পৌরসভা পরিচালনা করছে । এই হাঁসপাতালটি লন্ডন মিশন নার্সিংহোম নামেও পরিচিত । এই নার্সিংহোমটি সম্পুর্ন সরকারী না হওয়ায় এখানে চিকিৎসা করানো খুব ব্যায়বহুল যদিও সমস্ত পরিষেবা পাওয়া যায় না ।

     পরিষেবাঃ জিয়াগঞ্জ শহরটি জিয়াগঞ্জ – আজিমগঞ্জ পৌরসভা বিভিন্ন পরিষেবা দিয়ে এই শহরে একটি সূজনশীল পরিবেশ গড়ে তুলেছে । যেমন সুন্দর রাস্তাঘাট, বিদ্যুৎ পরিষেবা, আর্সেনিক মুক্ত পানীয় জল, পরিষ্কার পরিচ্ছন্ন পরিবেশ, জল নিকাসি ব্যবস্থা, টেলিফোন পরিষেবা, ছোটো ছোটো শিশু উদ্যান ও খেলার মাঠ । এছাড়া বিভিন্ন নাগরিক পরিষেবা ও প্রশাসনিক পরিষেবা জিয়াগঞ্জ বাসিরা খুব ভালই পেয়ে থাকে ।

  যাতায়াত ব্যবস্থাঃ জিয়াগঞ্জ শহরটি মুর্শিদাবাদ জেলার মধ্যস্থলে অবস্থিত হওয়ার কারনে যাতায়াত ব্যবস্থা খুবই ভাল । এই শহরটি সমতল ভূমি হওয়ায় সড়ক পথ, রেল পথ, ও জল পথ ( ভাগিরথী নদী ধরে ) – এর বিশেষ সুবিধা রয়েছে । এছাড়া জিয়াগঞ্জ এবং আজিমগঞ্জ শহরের সাথে যোগাযোগ নৌপথে হয় ( সদর ঘাট, নিমতলা ঘাট ) ।

    পর্যটন কেন্দ্রঃ মুর্শিদাবাদ জেলা এতিহাসিক পর্যটন কেন্দ্র হিসেবে ভারতবর্ষের মানচিত্রে চিহ্নিত হয়ে রয়েছে । তবে জিয়াগঞ্জ শহরে পর্যটন কেন্দ্র বলতে রয়েছে কিছু ছোট খাটো মন্দির ( যেমনঃ দাদস্থান মন্দির, কমলে কামেনি মন্দির ) , দু-একটি শিশু উদ্যান , ও দু-একটি পার্ক ( যেমনঃ বর্নালি পার্ক , বাগডহর পার্ক ) । তবে পৌরউদ্যানটি এবং দাদস্থান মন্দিরটি পর্যটন কেন্দ্র রুপে কিছুটা জনপ্রিয়তার শীর্ষে রয়েছে ।

    অভাব ও অসুবিধাঃ ১) জিয়াগঞ্জ শহরটি ‘ডি’ ক্যাটাগরির একটি পৌরসভা হওয়ায় এখানে আমরা নাগরিক পরিষেবা থেকে বঞ্চিত ।

২) এই শহরে বিদ্যুৎ পরিষেবা সমস্ত কোনে পৌঁছে গেলেও অনেক জায়গায় রাস্তায় আলোর অভাব রয়েছে ।

৩) জিয়াগঞ্জ শহরের পথে আর্সেনিক মুক্ত পানীয় জল থাকলেও শহরের প্রতিটি ঘরে এখনো পৌঁছায়নি – এখানকার বেশিরভাগ মানুষ আর্সেনিক যুক্ত জল পান করে ।

৪) জিয়াগঞ্জ শহরে দুটি হাঁসপাতাল থাকলেও – উন্নত মানের চিকিৎসা পদ্ধতি ও ভাল ডাক্তার এখানে নেই, এর জন্য সাধারণ মানুষকে ছুটে যেতে হয় সদর শহর লালবাগ বা বহরমপুর বা কলকাতা ।

৫) এখানে রাজনৈতিক গোলযোগ একটু কম থাকলেও কলেজ গুলিতে ছাত্র রাজনীতিতে মাঝে মাঝে গণ্ডগোল হয়ে থাকে ।

৬) এছাড়াও এখানে বিভিন্ন প্রশাসনিক , রাজনৈতিক সামাজিক কিছু সমস্যা লেগেই থাকে ।

পরিশেষে , অনেক অভাব ও অসুবিধা থাকলেও জিয়াগঞ্জবাসী তাদের এই শহরটিকে নিজের মনের মণিকোঠায় ধরে রেখেছে ।

                  Most popular tourist spot of Azimganj Jiaganj town – Baranagar town located at Azimganj town. The people from different parts used to here for the purpose of ‘Trade’. Baranagar means ‘Big City’ or a ‘BIG AREA’ ,Bara-means ‘big’ and ‘nagar’ –means ;city with a population .

                But this area (Baranagar) has came in front of the world when it was known for the ‘Terracota’ works on the walls of temples. One could find here a magnificent and outstanding works of burnt clay known as Terracota.

Char Bangla Temple

                   When Rani (Queen). Bhabani came in this village then from Nator (Now in Bangladesh) after       her husband death leaving her everything built these wonderful creations monuments.

Rani Bhabani was a pious lady and she was also a loyal follower of lord Shiva. So she constructed or patronized all the temples dedicating to lord Shiva. There were lots of temples and buildings in this vast village. But unfortunately, there are some of them left now. Most of them have been gone in the river and of course some of them have been broken down for other purposes. Which are left now in this village are under preservation.

There are mainly three monuments present now. These are - 

Char Bangla Temple (Maintain by Govt. of India).

Bhavaniswar Temple (Maintain by Govt. of India).

Bhavaniswar Mandir

Gangeswar Temple (Jod Bangla) (Maintain by Govt. of India).

And of course there is a building known as Rajbari where Rani used to live. Char Bangla temple was constructed in the year of 1755 almost. The name refers to Four Banglow. Char means four and bangle means Banglow. The noticeable things of this temple is observe the works on the tablets. These tell about mythological story and about daily life. You would find out about the daily life incidents to the North side temple at the down two rows. And others are about the epics’ The Ramayana’ and ‘The Mahabharata’. Unfortunately, there are also many temples which are beyond preservation. These temples are not protected, the Government should take steps immediately. Otherwise one important chapter of History is going to be missing.

Bhutia is considered to be the torchbearer of Indian football in the international arena.) in Azimganj town of Murshidabad district for Loksabha Election 2014. He never came at Azimganj town before 19/04/2014, so he is first time in Azimganj town. He does not came for playing any football match or visiting any football club or giving any inspiration to any football player of Azimganj – Jiaganj town. Although, there are many football club as well as Azimganj Young Men Athletic Association (Y.M.A.A.) and they have own football ground. He came for promoting his Trinamul Congress Party (TMC) for the Loksabha Election 2014 – although he is not the candidate – the candidate of 11 - Murshidabad Loksabha Circle is Md. Ali (TMC Candidate).
